Birch

This is my fourth quilt in the Literature series.   It is inspired by Anna Karenina by Tolstoy.  I wanted to make a quilt about an image or feeling which a book evokes.  For me, snowy birch forests sum up everything Russian, though it turns out there aren't as many of them in that book as I'd thought!  You can read more here.

(I had a brainwave: if you want to take arty photographs of a mini quilt outdoors, iron freezer paper to the back to stop it getting muddy!)

Struggle Street

The fourth mini in our Literature series was a struggle...

My mini is an abstract representation of two of my favourite novels...

"Great expectations"

and "To Kill a Mockingbird"

It was a struggle for Pip and Atticus....

so  I call it "Struggle Street"

Blueberries for Sal

The children's literature book for this quarter's round is Blueberries for Sal.

My 12" x 12" mini quilt is literal in interpretation.
The"onomatopoia" words of the berries dropping into Sal's pail are embroidered.
Sal, her pail and one of the bears (you can decide if it is baby or mama) were appliqued.
I had fun shopping for the blueberry fabric--just a fat quarter.
The triangles on the back are great for hanging.

Read more about the quilt and where it will be donated HERE.

#4 in the Literature Series

Today is the posting of our last literature-themed quilt challenges, and I chose Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" for mine.  More information is found *here* about my interpretation of the poem, some construction techniques, and reflections.

Haiku

Inspired by the Basho poem:

An old pond
A frog jumps in
The sound of water

I tried to capture the deceptive simplicity of the haiku with this quilt.  So much is conveyed in a few words - apart from the view, sound and atmosphere of the moment described in the poem there are many cultural resonances.  It doesn't matter if we don't 'get' them all and hopefully it wouldn't matter if no-one knew what this quilt was about!

The Moors

My work for this quarter's "Literature" theme was inspired by the moors which feature in Jane Eyre, and were such a significant part of the lives and work of Charlotte Bronte and her sisters.  You can read more about it here.

Rosetta

This is my mini for this month's reveal, based on the "Literature" theme....

I used the history of the translation of the Rosetta Stone as the inspiration for mine.

More details about the poem and what prompted this interpretation on my blog at OPQuilt.com  I purposely left this unbound as I plan to put all four of my Literature quilts together at the end of this year and create a new quilt.
